An architect or a designer can be hired by the owner to come up with approved plans for the project. The person who does the remodeling has to be a licensed contractor. Sometimes, a general contractor hires sub-contractors for large projects.

While a remodel is changing the form of something (adding a new shower to an existing bathroom), renovation focuses more on restoring something old into good repair (fixing up a creaky floor, for example, or taking on a kitchen renovation cost)

There are four types of renovation projects: basics, curb appeal, value-added, and personal preference. Not all of them provide a high return on investment.

The average full kitchen remodel is defined as: “Update an outmoded 200-square-foot kitchen with a functional layout of 30 linear feet of semi-custom wood cabinets, including a 3-by-5-foot island; laminate countertops; and standard double-tub stainless-steel sink with standard single-lever faucet.

Major renovation means a substantial addition to an existing building or a substantial change to the interior configuration or the energy system of an existing building.

Kitchens remained the most popular and most expensive room to renovate in 2018. In fact, the median spend on kitchen renovations jumped 27 percent in 2018, following a 10 percent increase in 2017.

Renovation means “restore to a good state of repair.” In other words, dilapidated buildings or poorly maintained houses are sometimes considered to be in a state of disrepair. Remember, construction involving renovation refers to “restoring” or “repairing” an existing structure, replacing the old with the new.

Remodeling is the process of changing the functionality and the design of an area. It may involve tearing out a wall to expand a bathroom and reconfiguring a kitchen layout so the cabinets, fridge, sink, and range are in different locations. Constructing an addition to your home would also be considered a remodel.

New additions to your house, such as walls, doors, windows, and even a fireplace, require a permit. Most electrical or plumbing renovations, such as bathroom remodels, need a permit. If you plan to do an interior remodel and only change the visual elements of your bathroom, a permit is not required.

Without the proper permits, there’s no guarantee that your contractors will execute a professional job. The results of this could be disastrous. For instance, if you sell, those substandard improvements might cause you trouble during a home inspection.
